12th December 1918

Gunner George Davies, 12th Mortar Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, died on 12th December 1918 in the Royal Infirmary, Liverpool, aged 26. He was born in Alderley, Cheshire in 1892, but baptised at Meriden, where the family had moved by 1894.

George was the second child and eldest son of parents, Worthington (a farmer) and Ann (née Worthington) who had married in Alderley in 1890. The couple had seven children (five girls, two boys) of whom one – Margery (1903-1904) – died in infancy.

The family moved to Moat House Farm, Meriden c.1893 and lived there until at least 1911. George is recorded as a farmer’s son, assisting on the farm. His mother, Ann, died on 24th April 1914, aged 41 and is buried at Meriden churchyard.  By 1940, his father, Worthington, was living at Brooklands Farm, Balsall Common, where he died in 1951.

George Davies is buried at Meriden churchyard and, although listed on the Commonwealth War Graves website, his family chose the option of a private gravestone rather an a military pattern headstone.
