The open-air swimming pool in Malvern Park, Solihull was purchased by Solihull Council in March 1954, although it had been in use as a privately-owned swimming pool since the early 1940s. It was apparently the first municipal swimming pool in the Solihull district and, according to the Birmingham Daily Post, 8th February 1954, it had been built by Horace Brueton, who had bought the Malvern Hall estate c.1922.

Marston Green Lawn Tennis Club was founded in 1923 and was known as Elite Lawn Tennis Club. The members in 1923 are pictured above. The women wore long dresses and men wore long trousers, and initially, there were more women players than men. The Elite name was dropped in 1926 and it became MGLTC.

Having been on a 294-day journey to all 72 Commonwealth countries, the Commonwealth Games baton returned to England on Monday 4th July 2022 for a 25-day tour of the regions. After visiting Sandwell on 25th July, the baton officially arrived in the Solihull Borough at 8am on Tuesday 26th July 2022, when the day’s first Batonbearer, Wayne Elcock (BB001), carried the baton into the grounds of Castle Bromwich Hall Hotel.

On 6th March 1867, local jockey John Page (1844-1917) won the Grand National for the first time, riding the Duke of Hamilton’s horse, Cortolvin. He won the race at Aintree by five lengths. Five years later, he won the Grand National again on Casse Tete and, until his retirement in 1880, was one of the foremost jockeys in England and France.
